Hypertension – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment


High blood pressure or more popularly known as hypertension is high pressure in the arteries or the vessels that carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body. The normal blood pressure of a human being is typically below 120/80. People who reach 140/90 are most likely suffering from hypertension.


What are the causes of hypertension?

Although there isn’t a direct cause of hypertension, it develops gradually over a period of time, based on certain underlying diseases present in one’s body.

Other causes can be:

  • Age
  • Alcohol and tobacco use
  • Existing health conditions
  • Physical inactivity
  • A salt-rich diet associated with processed and fatty foods
  • Low potassium in the diet
  • Certain diseases and medications


Symptoms of hypertension:

Symptoms of hypertension include:

  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Palpitation
  • Chest pains

Hypertension is often referred to as one of the silent killers as symptoms are not quite obvious allowing it to develop unnoticed until it creates other serious complications.



Treatment-There are a number of medications available to manage hypertension. Surgical procedures may also be required to cure other internal complications.

Prevention- Lifestyle changes, adhering to a strict diet & regular exercise is also important to alleviate the risks of heart attacks.
