Brief summary: 

Another name for this is conjugated bilirubin. Bilirubin is made by the breaking down of old red blood cells in the body. It is a part of bile and helps digest food. It is bound to albumin (unconjugated indirect bilirubin). The direct bilirubin travels from the liver into the small intestine. It is responsible for the distinctive yellow color of urine.

 

Technical purpose: 

The purpose of this test is to check the liver. For those that consume a lot of alcohol. Or for signs and symptoms of jaundice, nausea, fatigue, belly swelling, darkening of urine, hepatitis, gallstones, inflammation of the bile duct

 

Test procedure: 

The test is done with a sample of blood or with a urine sample

 

Test outcomes: 

Normal results of the blood test, range from 0 to 0.3 mg/dL in adults. If the results are higher, there is a problem.
