25-Hydroxy Vitamin D Test

The 25-hydroxy vitamin D test is the most accurate way to measure how much vitamin D is in your body. Vitamin D helps control calcium and phosphate levels in the body.

Technical Purpose –

Vitamin D helps the body maintain strong bones. The 25-hydroxy vitamin D test is used to detect bone weakness or other bone malfunctions or disorders that occur as a result of a vitamin D deficiency. The results of a 25-hydroxy vitamin D test can help your doctor recommend an appropriate treatment to make sure your body is getting enough vitamin D.

Test Process –

Your doctor will tell you not to eat anything for four to eight hours before the test. The 25-hydroxy vitamin D test requires a common blood test. Your doctor or a lab technician will draw blood from a vein in your arm using a needle. In most cases, a quick finger prick will provide enough for a blood sample in children and infants.

Test Outcome –

The normal range of vitamin D is measured as nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). Many experts recommend a level between 20 and 40 ng/mL. Others recommend a level between 30 and 50 ng/mL.
The examples above are common measurements for the results of these tests. Normal value ranges may marginally vary among different laboratories. Some laboratories use different types of measurement or test different samples. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results, and if you require vitamin D supplements.
